This 1962 New York Yankees, Souvenir
Baseball was
sold at Yankee Stadium souvenir
stands. The ball was also made
available through the mail. One of the
first souvenirs kids get when they go
to their first Major league game, over
the years most of these balls
have been used to submission, or the
signatures faded. The few that made it
through the years are a desired. The
sweet Spot on this baseball belongs to
Ralph Houk, and Mickey Mantle. The same
'old style' Mickey Mantle autograph was
used on facsimile baseballs throughout
the 1950's, and 1960's.
Telltale signs that you might have a souvenir stamped autograph baseball
include: same density and thickness, no
pen flow, signatures do not overlap, no
disturbance with the flow of the
signature over the seams, and
interruption with the flow of the
signature caused by the curvature of
the ball. A part of the signature might
disappear, and reappear, or skip. On
Yankee souvenir baseballs, Yogi Berra
is stamped Larry Berra, and Whitey Ford
is stamped Ed Ford.
Souvenir baseballs with stamped autographs were made by The Autographed
Ball Company. The company was founded
in 1947 by ex major league ballplayer
Richard B. (Dick) Culler, who had
invented a technique to stamp
facsimiles of players' signatures on
baseballs, to mass-produced. The balls
were produced with current team rosters
and reflected midseason call ups and
trades. Team Balls made in April, can
be completely different by October. The
company went out of business in 2014.
