Cigarette and tobacco premiums grew in
popularity in the early 1900s.
Companies inserted gifts in packs of
cigarette or included coupons to redeem
for presents such as baseball cards,
card mounts (cabinet cards), silks,
novelty leathers, and "blankets." Here
is an example of a gift slip that was
included with a pack of Turkish
Trophies and Helmar Cigarettes. The 4"
x 5" gift-slips were good for one cents
in cash, or returned for presents that
were listed on the back.
The presents included Hamilton King Girls, National Flags, Actresses,
Actors, College Mascots, College
Shields with Seals, Generals or Indians
and baseball players. Five Card mounts
(faux cabinet cards) measuring 6"x 8"
were made available for the return of
15 gift-slips, 12 cards mounts for 25
gift-slips, and 25 card mounts cost you
50.
The 25 baseball player designs were also made available on Satin (known
today as S81 silks) or natural hide
shape leather (known today as L1
Leathers). One 7” x 9” silk ("design on
satin") were made available for the
return of 20 gift-slips, 3 silks for
60, and 5 silks for 80 gift-slips. For
the return of 35 gift slips you
received one 10” x 12” design on
leather, or 3 leathers for 90 gift
slips.
